2002 Third Quarter Results

3rd Quarter clips were judged by the staff of the Southeast Missourian, Cape Girardeau , MO, daily circulation 20,000 plus. Judges: Don Frazie, Fred Lynch, Heidi Hall, Jamie Hall, Gabe

Judges' Comments: First - Amazing coverage and drive shown by the photog. Second- Wow! No firefighters on scene, yet! Third - Simply a gorgeous photo that, no doubt, meant a lot to readers.

FEATURE - (21)

Judges' Comments: First - Well composed with a rare perspective of the local area. Second - Amazing image of what dogs mean to their owners. Third TIE. Kayak shot - Love the artistic value of the image. Lake shot - Nicely composed, very inviting.

Judges' Comments: First - Photo really captured the energy and emotion of the game. Second - Expressions make the image. Third - Lighting, competition, and movement- everything came together.

SPORTS FEATURE - (8)

Judges' Comments: First - Everything works to take this a notch above the standard. Second - The expressions on the kids' faces tell the story. Third - Great celebration. Should have run larger.

PORTRAIT & PERSONALITY - (11)

Judges' Comments: First - Lots of emotion. Second - Simple subject with great use of lighting. Third - Great use of space.

All illustration entries will be judged together in the 4th quarter clip contest.

Judges' Comments: First - Certainly captures the moment, as well as it's dark beauty. Second - This image was just another fishing image without the beautiful light. Third - Simple and colorful.

PHOTO PACKAGE - (11)

Judges' Comments: First - Slow news day. Took a subject nearly forgotten and told a great story. Second - These musicians were captured truly enjoying their time together. Third - Good use of lighting, but a little too much trapped white space.

PHOTO STORY - (8)

Judges' Comments: First - Great use of images in layout. Good use of light. Second - Beautiful use of color. Give the sense of a laid back lifestyle. Third - A couple of very good images with special moments. Would like to have liked to see fewer images used. Needs some detail.
